We have mentioned Syphay on this blog in the past, and have identified it as one of the better Thai restaurants in the city of Edmonton.  I personally have yet to find a dish on their menu which I have not liked; from their salads, soups, stirfry’s and especially love their fried fish dishes.

Syphay Platter, includes the sweet pineapple shrimp, spring rolls, and garlic shrimp rolls.  We noticed a slight alteration to the platter on our last couple visits – as they removed the Tod Paa Mun (fishcake), but have padded the quantities of the other items to compensate.   I do miss the fishcake, but this fried platter of goodness will probably continue to find its way into our order.

Another regular dish on our table seems to be the Pad Seafood Phuket.  A medly of scallops, squid, shrimp, mussels, mushrooms, and peppers in a hot basil sauce.  Just the right level of heat to heighten the flavours of the seafood, always cooked to perfection.

One of my other favorites is the Gai Pad Med Mamuang, a.k.a. cashew chicken.  Photographed here was the crispy chicken option – served with fried tofu, carrots, peppers and onions.  Sweet, savoury, spicy and altogether spectacular.

Everyone I dine with, tends to prefer an order of coconut rice with their Thai food.  I’m not a big fan of the sweet coconut rice in general, as I find it interferes with the flavours of some dishes.  So my preference goes to the ‘sticky glutinous rice’.

Maybe I just like playing with my food?
As I was taught by some Thai friends, that this particular type of rice is meant to be compressed with your fingers into bitesized balls, which is then used to mop up the sauces.

Syphay continues to be in my regular rotation for it’s amazing food, and great service.   I wish I had photos of the countless other great dishes being served at this restaurant, but my other favorites include:

Thai-Lao Salad served with tomatoes, cucumber, hard boiled eggs, in a light mustard dressing
Paa Lad Prik: fried whole halibut with a chili-lime sauce

  1. Syphay is a laotian name. I’m pretty sure this restaurant is own by laotian folk. Thai and Laos foods are pretty similar. Perhaps the next time you’re in this place, ask for lao sausage, jel mark len(tomato sauce) and papaya salad. They might be surprise by your request.

  2. Thanks See, I will definitely check to see if they can hook me up next time!

As these two cuisines are so similar – do you have any triggers to distinguish between them?
