Freybe Factory Outlet – Vancouver, BC

Freybe Factory Outlet
1927 East Hastings St.

I’m sure most of the Vancouverites (and other Western Canadians) are familiar with the Freybe brand. Freybe luncheon meats and sausages are often sold side by side with other common supermarket-grade cold cut brands such as Maple Leaf or Oscar Mayer. It costs a bit more to buy Freybe products, but I believe it is worth the premium. I have always thought that the quality of Freybe’s products as being a quite a few notches above these other brands. I also know that they use quite traditional methods to make their product.

The Freybe brand is fairly ubiquitous, but I notice that most grocery stores and supermarkets sell a tiny subset of their entire line. If all you have seen of Freybe is Black Forest Ham, Honey Ham, Hungarian Salami and the other common sandwich cuts, then you owe it to yourself to visit this Outlet store to see how extensive their offerings truly are. I happen to live fairly close by so this store is on my regular grocery route.

There are dozens of different kinds of sausages and other cured meat products here. Their best products are the German style cured sausages and meats – though they sell sausages in Italian, Polish, Hungarian and other European styles. The prices here are often well below grocery store pricing. The prices are especially very good if you are able to commit to bulk amounts (eg one of their large two foot long cured sausages). That will mean having your own home deli slicer, of course. Luckily, for smaller amounts, they are more than happy to do the slicing for you at the meat counter.

They have a very good bacon which, unlike other brands, is sold dry – not sopping wet with brine. I can’t stand wet bacon – not only does it taste insipid and cook up poorly – to me it is an obvious attempt at padding its weight for sale. My two favourites are the Tiroler and the Hickory Smoked both of which can be purchased vacuum packed and pre-sliced slightly thicker than supermarket bacon.

Their meat counter that sells fresh meats and fresh sausages. It doesn’t have the variety as the most of the other butchers in the area, but their prices are some of the most reasonable. They sell German and Eastern European- style cuts for schnitzel and other dishes that are not commonplace at other butches.

They also have a nice selection of mustards and other Eastern European sundries and candy.  Check it out if you are in the area – I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

  1. Freybe is our cold cut maker of choice, most of their products are gluten free.
I would love to be able to find their Tiroler Speck here in YYC somewhere.

Did this place also carry the Gourmet Chef line of products?

  2. I have seen some of the soups in the past. I haven’t paid attention as the deli meats are my usual targets here. I’ll have a look and post back next time I am there.

  3. Freybe used to make the absolute best hot Italian sausage around! Unfortunately, I don’t think they make it anymore. Too bad! But their chorizos are quite fab, but I sure miss their Italian sausage. The quality is extra high on everything I’ve tried and worth every penny.

    • Hi Horst
Freybe is a fairly large wholesale operation whose products are available in Western canada (and probably beyond) I believe. Have a look at your local supermarket and ask about it. This particular outlet store is now closed unfortunately.

      • The Freybe factory outlet actually changed hands and is now the Continental Sausage Factory Outlet still at 1927 E. Hastings St.They still have a large selection of Freybe product at great prices.
