Fried Chicken. In my travels, I’ve come across fried chicken in almost every culture. This was definitely surprising to me. Just as surprising, is that it often was really good fried chicken.

By the estimation of my fanatical, fried chicken loving sibling, Korean’s do the best fried chicken. But neither of us have explored a lot of the southern United States, and that’s somewhere that really appreciates their fried chicken.

The Front Street location of Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken is the downtown Memphis location of the original Mason, Tennessee shop. And from the lineups and the crowds, it really is world famous.
Not much to look at, the place is completely full at all hours of the day. Clean, and tidy, the focus is really on one thing – the chicken. As has been accurately reported in thousands of reviews, this is not fast food. As the saying goes, good food takes time to prepare. And Gus’s serves good chicken!

We start with the southern classic of fried pickles. I’ve had them several times, but my dining companions have not. They aren’t big fans. They come with a nice breading, crisp on the outside, which is a nice contrast to the soft and briny pickle on the inside. The prepacked ranch is a bit disappointing, but overall the pickles are decent.

Next is the main course – fried chicken. We try a combination of the dark and white meat. These chicken arent perfect, but are pretty darn close! The skin is perfectly fried, not greasy at all, but crisp and flavourful. Inside, the chicken has managed to stay moist and tender. Great flavour, great texture contrast, Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken has justifiably earned it’s reputation. Sibling gives it an 8.5 out of 10. He’s picky about his fried chicken, and this is great fried chicken. The accompanying white bread, beans, and coleslaw arent anything worth writing home about. A side order of french fries are edible, but nothing better than “average”.

We finish the meal with a piece of coconut pie, which has a nice crust, but an overly sweet filling.  It’s a good piece of pie, but at Gus’s, i’d probably prefer another piece of chicken.

With entree prices between $5 and $9, Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken is great value – lately my most important consideration. The restaurant isnt much to look at, and the chicken does take a long time to prepare, but it’s worth the wait. If you’re in Memphis, don’t miss a trip (or two trips in our case) to Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken!

  1. I wish I could have tagged along on this TN trip of yours. The chicken as you describe sounds fantastic!

I’ll have to give deep fried pickles a try. I love sour/tart things but just can’t get over the idea of frying pickles in hot oil. 🙂 I do admit though, they sound more tasty that deep fried chocolate bars…

  2. look I have a problem with the with your assuption of Gus Chicken. My experience has been great everytime me and my family comes to Memphis from Cleveland Ohio. My first time was during my birthday weekend 4years ago we went on a tour and the guide told us that there was a place that had the best chix that will make you smack your momma so we tried it and fell in love with it. The pickle was good but not a fan of the fried green tomatoes. but if it was left to me Gus’s has the best chicken I ever had.
